An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small device placed inside the uterus by a trained doctor. IUDs are one of the most effective forms of reversible contraception available and can provide protection from pregnancy for several years.
At Manningham General Practice, our experienced GPs offer IUD consultations, insertions and removals, and can help you choose the option that best suits your individual needs.
Types of IUDs available
There are two main types of IUDs available in Australia:
Hormonal IUDs
Hormonal IUDs release a small amount of progestogen directly into the uterus.
Mirena®
Mirena is one of the most commonly used hormonal IUDs in Australia.
Benefits may include:
- Highly effective contraception
- Long-lasting protection
- Reduced menstrual bleeding
- Improvement in heavy periods
- Reduction in period pain for some patients
Mirena can provide contraception for up to 8 years in many circumstances.
Kyleena®
Kyleena is a smaller hormonal IUD that contains a lower dose of hormone than Mirena.
Benefits may include:
- Highly effective contraception
- Long-lasting protection
- Smaller device size
- Lower hormone dose
Kyleena can provide contraception for up to 5 years.
Non-hormonal IUDs (Copper IUDs)
Copper IUDs do not contain hormones.
Instead, copper prevents fertilisation and provides highly effective contraception.
Benefits may include:
- Hormone-free contraception
- Long-term protection
- Highly effective pregnancy prevention
- Suitable for many people who prefer to avoid hormonal contraception
Depending on the device used, copper IUDs can provide contraception for up to 10 years or longer.
Copper IUDs may also be used in some circumstances as emergency contraception when inserted within an appropriate timeframe after unprotected intercourse.
Which IUD Is right for me?
The best IUD option depends on a range of factors, including:
- Your age and medical history
- Whether you would prefer a hormonal or non-hormonal option
- Your menstrual symptoms
- Future pregnancy plans
- Previous experiences with contraception
During your consultation, your GP will discuss the advantages and considerations of each option and help you choose the most suitable IUD.
IUD insertion
Before an IUD insertion, you will usually have a consultation with your GP to discuss:
- Your contraceptive needs
- Your medical history
- The different IUD options available
- Timing of insertion
- What to expect during and after the procedure
Our experienced GPs perform IUD insertions in a supportive and comfortable clinical environment.
No out-of-pocket fee for weekday insertions
Eligible IUD insertion procedures performed Monday to Friday are bulk billed, with no out-of-pocket fee for the insertion itself.
Please note that the IUD device must be purchased separately from your pharmacy.
IUD removal
IUD removal is a simple procedure that can usually be performed during a standard appointment.
Reasons for removal may include:
- Reaching the end of the device lifespan
- Planning a pregnancy
- Changing contraception methods
- Replacing an existing IUD
If desired, a new IUD can often be inserted at the same appointment.
